Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said the government will continue working until small boat crossings are eradicated, but refused to commit to achieving this by the next general election.
• In his first interview with GB News, he noted increased law enforcement on the French side of the Channel in summer 2026 had led to a reduction in crossings compared with last year.
• He told Christopher Hope, "We will keep going at this issue until we deliver that eradication that people are looking for. We will now change our tactics and we will be relentless"
• Asked about ending crossings by the next election, Burnham replied it would be wrong to make a prediction based on a timeline.
• He added that crossings and overall immigration are down, describing it as “real progress”, and pledged to remain completely focused on the issue.
